The 12 team league is split into 3 divisions made up of 4 teams each. The divisions are named for the 3 major components of a Magic Shot: Patron, Jeager Bomb and PBR.
Divisions are randomly reassigned each year.
Each team plays all other teams within its division twice per season.
Because of the 13 week schedule, this means that there will always one team outside the division that gets played twice. This team will be chosen at random.
We use a standard 13 week regular season. We set the schedule such that each team plays all other teams within its division twice and 7 of the 8 remaining teams once, meaning that each season, there will be one matchup that does not occur per team. More specifically, weeks 1-3 are divisional matchups, then weeks 4-10 are inter-divisional (everyone once except one team), and weeks 11-13 are divisional rematches. This was originally done to ensure that teams would not have players on by weeks when playing within their division, but the bye week rules have since changed, so it may no longer be the case.
Because we realign the divisions every year, we have never put forth the extra effort to ensure that two teams do not go consecutive years without playing each other.
Before 2014, the default scheduler in the league manager used at the time was unable to perform the tasks laid out above. Because of this a 3rd party scheduler had to be used, such as footballguys.com, and the schedule had to be hand entered. The following schedule was created by Dom for the 2016 season, and may be used to set the interdivisional matchups in weeks 4-10.
At the conclusion of each season, the buy-in money will be paid out to the winners as follows:
League Champion - $100
Regular Season Champion - $80
Division Winner * - $35 each
Trophy Fund - $50
* There will only be two division winners because the regular season champ will always win his/her division and those winnings are total.
* Division champs are decided by overall record (not division record) and then total points for. By default, Yahoo uses division record, so it should be ignored.
In 2021 the league voted and approved removal of divisions. This rule change was proposed by Dom motivated by the observation that setting up the schedule to accommodate head-to-head play with divisions is a lot of work for the commissioner, and especially difficult to learn for new commissioners. It is hoped that removal of divisions will encourage more league mates to serve as commissioner on a rotating basis.
Most of the discussion about this rule change revealed MSP members did not see much added benefit in divisions and agreement that removal of division would simplify. There was associated discussion about elimination of keepers, but this rule change was not formally proposed nor voted upon.
The vote to remove divisions was unanimous among the nine MSP members who voted. Sunit, Ben, and Chris G did not vote and were publicly shamed for their blatant disregard for the League Pledge.
